How many of them end up taking their own lives as a result of psychological violence? What are the signs and consequences of the grip inherent in toxic relationships? Which resources do we have at the level of the police and the justice system to fight the phenomenon, and how can we improve them? The notion of forced suicide is beginning to make its way into people’s consciousness. Participate in the conference organized by the non-profit organization “Mouvement pour l’Égalité entre les Femmes et les Hommes”.

    Conference on forced suicides by actors in the field

    Topic 1: Investigation of increased suicide risk in abusive and/or toxic intimate relationships

    The non-profit organization, the Mouvement pour l’Egalité entre les Femmes et les Hommes, MEFH conducted a survey based on the psychological and physical violence suffered within the couple, as well as on a measurement of the risk of suicide. Can suicide be linked to toxic relationships in the couple? The results will be presented to you at the start of this conference.

    Speaker : Aude Poncette, psychologist at the Mouvement pour l’Egalité entre les Femmes et les Hommes, MEFH, ASBL.

    Topic 2: What is forced suicide?

    What is meant by forced suicide? When does this definition apply? What are the mechanisms that can link suffered psychological violence and suicide?

    Speaker : Yaël Mellul, former lawyer specializing in domestic violence and actress of the recognition of forced suicide in France.

    Topic 3: The phenomenon of influence and the process of marital domination

    The influence or coercive control is a phenomenon that is still poorly understood. However, this notion is essential to fully understand the reality of women who are victims of domestic violence and the process of marital domination. This part will shed light on the concrete situations experienced by the victims of toxic relationships in the couple.

    Topic 4: Police Response to Domestic Violence Situations

    How domestic violence cases are handled by the police and how could this handling be improved?

    Topic 5: Exchange with a representative of the public prosecutor’s office

    Taking into account the context of domestic violence in cases of suicide should be possible. Where are we in the Belgian judicial system?

    Speaker : Nadia Laouar, Deputy Public Prosecutor and Coordinator of the network of expertise in matters of crime against persons, General Prosecutor’s Office of Liège.

    Topic 6: The figures of forced suicides in Belgium in France and in Europe

    Presentation of an estimate of the number of forced suicides in Belgium, France and Europe.

    Speaker : Yaël Mellul, former lawyer specializing in domestic violence and actor in the recognition of forced suicide in France.
